This technique uses Masks to make jade-like three dimensional text. Before you start you'll need to download the texture below, Greensea.jpg. Open it in Paint Shop Pro before you begin.
 

The first thing we do is create our mask.  Start with a newfile, about 400 x 150 pixels, white background, with 16 million colors. Lay down some text in light gray. The light gray in the standard paletteworks quite well. Any font with some width will do. The bigger the pointsize, the better the texture will show up. Here I've used Time New Roman,60 pt.
 
 

Next, go to the Image menu, Special Effects: Drop Shadow. Set theopacity to 255, the blur to 20, the shadow color to black, and the verticaland horizontal offsets to 3.
 
 

Using the Shape Select tool, draw a rectangle around your text. Now go to the Edit Menu: Copy. Make sure that your background color isset to white, and then hit the Delete key. Your text will disappear, butthat's okay. Next, go again to the Edit Menu, and Paste your copied textas a transparent selection. Both the text and the shadow should now beselected.
 
 

To finish the image we are going to use as our 3D mask, Go to Image,Special Filters: Emboss. Be sure to take note of the name of the window( the Image number)
 
 

Now we make our text. Open a new file, the same size as the lastone.  Go to the Mask menu, New: From Image. In the dropdown box, choosethe text image you just made. Then click the Source luminance and Invertmask data boxes.  Now click on the Flood fill tool. Set the Toleranceto 200, the fill style to Pattern, and in the Options menu, choose Greensea.jpgas your pattern.  Finally, do the flood fill twice on your new file.You should see the green text appear.
 
 

To give the text the luminous translucence of jade, go to the Colormenu and choose Adjust: Red/Green/Blue. Set Red and Blue to 0, and Greento 75.
 
 

To finish, save your work as a transparent GIF.
